CIVL5269 - Advanced Concrete Structures
Assignment 2: Linear Stress Analysis
TASK
You have been tasked to design a shear wall using the resultants of a linear elastic finite element analysis. Details of the Shear Wall are provided in Figure 1. The measurements shown in Figure 1 are in mm. The base of the wall is fully fixed and a lateral load of 6000 kN is applied to the top-left of the structure. You are to only design the element of the wall shown in red. This element is 250 mm thick. All other elements are 500 mm thick. A hole measuring 1.75m by 1m is located within the element to be designed, as shown.
Figure 1: Details of Structure to be Designed (Load Case 1)
A schematic of the finite element mesh used to analyse the structure is presented in Figure 2
Figure 2: Finite Element Mesh used in Analysis
The Principal strain vectors derived from the analysis arepresented in Figure 3
Figure 3: Principal strain vectors
Figure 4 plots σx, σy and τxy (in MPa) calculated at each node of the finite element mesh. A text output file has been uploaded onto CANVAS which contains more details of the analysis.
In this exercise you are to design the wall to AS3600:2018. You are to adopt φc=0.65, φs = 0.85, and fsy = 500 MPa. You are also to detail the wall and produce drawings suitable enough for a contractor to construct with.
