Assignment:

Answer ONE of the following questions. Your essay should be 2000 words long (you may go under or over the word count by no more than 10%), including quotations, and should provide an exact word count. The bibliography and filmography are not included in the word count. Your answer should analyse ONE or TWO films and/or television shows from the module. You MUST engage with AT LEAST THREE pieces of academic criticism (journal articles, book chapters, and/or monographs). You MUST NOT write on the text used in your short paper.

1. Discuss the role of vigilantism in ONE or TWO texts studied on the module.

2. Analyse the theme of race in ONE or TWO texts studied on the module.

3. Discuss the role of systemic or state violence in ONE or TWO texts studied on the module.

4. Discuss the theme of justice in ONE or TWO texts studied on the module.

5. Discuss the pathologisation of crime in ONE or TWO texts studied on the module.

6. Discuss the role of genre in ONE or TWO texts studied on the module.

7. Discuss the role of the monstrous in ONE or TWO texts studied on the module.

8. Analyse the relationship between law enforcement and criminals in ONE or TWO texts studied on the module.

9. To what extent are structural causes of violence explored in ONE or TWO texts studied on the module?

Ensure the question that you choose is clearly reproduced at the top of your work.  

Work that is submitted after 1pm WILL be penalised even if only late by a few minutes. You must ensure that you give yourself plenty of time to upload your work to Turnitin.

You should submit a COPY ELECTRONICALLY via the KLE. The submission should be ANONYMOUS, identified by your 8-digit student number on the front page of your document along with the module code and title. You MUST also use your student number AS THE SUBMISSION TITLE when you upload it (i.e. type your student number into the box labelled ‘Submission Title’).

Late submissions, without formally agreed extensions, will receive a maximum mark of 40, as long as they are received within 7 calendar days of the deadline.  Submissions received after 7 calendar days will receive a mark of 0.

· assess the intertextual connections between the representations of villains and/or vigilantes in screen texts drawing from the crime, horror, science fiction, and/or superhero genres

· research the cultural, historical, political, and social contexts surrounding these screen texts

· analyse the representation of villains and/or vigilantes using appropriate terminology for your chosen screen text(s)

· analyse the cultural politics of the representation of villains and/or vigilantes and relate them to wider debates about issues such as class, crime, gender, justice, power, and/or trauma

· write well-researched analyses at both short and longer lengths in support of clear arguments
