COURSEWORK 2: MINI PROJECT

5CCE2SAS: Signals and Systems

Aim: After completing this coursework, students can record signals using microphones and be familiar with potential noise sources. Furthermore, they can apply different techniques learned during the module to analyse body signals.

Project assignment

1.   Data: (1) A dataset containing swallowing sounds  (dataset_1) are provided on Keats for the analysis. The data includes five samples of swallowing water and five samples of swallowing food (biscuits). (2)  Each group shall also measure the sound produced during swallowing using their mobile devices. Each group should record five samples of swallowing sounds (dataset_2), either water or food (Pick one and mention it). If you choose food, then consider only food samples from dataset1 for comparison with your dataset2. And the same analogy applies if you decide to collect swallowing water.

2.   Design a data analysis approach (Remember to work on either swallowing water or food, not both) that shall include:

a.   Illustration of time-domain signals

b.   Quantification of the size and the signal-to-noise ratios of the signals and investigation of how downsampling the signals affects these two metrics

c.   Illustration of frequency spectra.

d.   Estimating the essential bandwidths of swallowing events and investigating how downsampling the signal affects the essential bandwidths.

e.   Compare the above metrics between dataset_1 and dataset_2.

f.    Graphs or Tables summarising the key findings (descriptive statistics)

3.  Write a report in a scientific article using IEEE conference paper  format   (template: https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html) of a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 5 pages (including references), with the required format of the template. Excess pages will not count towards the grade. Balance text/figure space ratio correctly. The report should contain

a.   a short introduction motivating the application of swallowing events.

b.   a method section describing the data and collection (Protocol). Furthermore, this section should describe the data analysis approaches that permit the reproducibility of the results.

c.   a result section summarising the key outcome using descriptive statistics

d.   a discussion of your approach and results.

e.  A Table with peer assessment of each member's contribution (in percentage).

f.   A list of a minimum of four references (maximum of eight references)

Deliverables (What to submit)

1.  Your data

2.  Your scientific report in PDF

3.  A collection of your codes (structured with comments) in .m or .py. Codes should run and produce all Figures submitted in the report.

Submission is made by one member only on behalf of the entire group, but it is the whole group's responsibility to verify that the submission has been correctly completed.

N.B: We will check for plagiarism, and the misconduct team will investigate similarity scores above 20%.
