STAT 312(R)/SYBB 312R: Basic Statistics for Engineering and Science
Summer semester 2024
Course Description
For advanced undergraduate students in engineering, physical sciences, life sciences. Comprehensive in-troduction to probability models and statistical methods of analyzing data with the object of formulating statistical models and choosing appropriate methods for inference from experimental and observational data and for testing the model’s validity. The course takes a balanced approach with equal emphasis on probability, fundamental concepts of statistics, point and interval estimation, hypothesis testing.
Prerequisites: Math 121, 122
Learning objectives
1. Provide you a firm basis for Probability theory, Statistical modeling and Statistical inference.
2. Enable you to use the course methods for practical scientific and engineering problems.
3. Learn to implement these in R using RStudio and RMarkdown(a pdf complier).
Required Textbook
Applied Statistics and Probability for Engineers, 7th ed., by Montgomery and Runger, Wiley, 2018.
R, a statistical programming language
You will often use the statistical programs R and RStudio for homework. R and RStudio are free and available for download at www.r-project.org and www.rstudio.org.
Course Schedule
A (tentative) course schedule is posted on Canvas. There you will find planned lecture topics as well as dates of exams and due dates for homework. This schedule will be updated regularly so make sure you check it every week. Note that the schedule will likely change depending on the progress we make in class, so note that dates for homework may change.
Quiz
There will be in-class quizzes periodically throughout the semester. These quizzes will be available on Canvas. No late submission will be accepted.
Exams
There will be a midterm and a final exam. Exams will consist of two parts. One will be in the form on canvas quiz, and the other part will be take home. For the canvas quiz it will be closed book, you will be allowed cheat sheet of your own construction.
Course Grading
In-class Quizzes: 40%
Exams: Midterm 30% Final: 30%
Tentative grading scale: A ∈ [90, 100] , B ∈ [80, 90) , C ∈ [70, 80) , D ∈ [60, 70), F ∈ [0, 60)
Disclamer: The ”Total” column in the Canvas gradebook does not necessarily display the correct grade.
