ENGG10007 Advanced Project Management
Coursework
The report on part 1 (850 words)
UWS Engineering Ltd is a multi disciplinary engineering company that operates throughout the UK and Europe. The company recently won a number of multi million pound contracts in Central Scotland. The Director of Operations for the UK is an enthusiastic supporter of the PRINCE2 method for project management and many of the senior managers within the organization are now qualified practitioners.
The contracts, which vary in size, complexity, value and duration, will together mean a significant increase in the workload for the UWS Engineering Ltd, Scottish Division. The contracts, managed as a series of projects and sub-projects, will be progressed in conjunction with existing operations. The Board of Directors of the Scottish Division of UWS Engineering Ltd., have produced the Project Mandate for the various projects and, for the larger projects, the Client (customer) provides the Project Brief.
In this coursework you are tasked to simulate the planning and control for a number of related projects which involve the coordination of a number of people and resources. Produced as a series of three written reports, each will have a title, contents, introduction (essentially outlining the aims), sections based on the tasks indicated below and conclusions (based on the aims). Each report must be properly referenced using the Harvard system. There are some notes on report writing on Aula. The following are some of the issues to be reported on. The marking schedule also provides assistance.
1. One of the first projects due to commence is the design, manufacture and installation of a gas fired heating system for a new £3m Centre for Engineering Excellence for Ayr College campus. The contract start date is June 2023 and the system must be completed and commissioned in 125 weeks.
1.1. With reference to the PRINCE2 processes, in starting up the project discuss the development and appointment of the Ayr Project management team including the Project Board, Project Assurance, Project Support and team management.
1.2. Define the role of each of these in the context of this particular project.
1.3. Create a one page job description for the Project Manager. To assist in the selection of a suitable candidate, indicate the preferred qualifications, background and character traits for this individual.

2. The second major contract is for the fabrication and erection of 600 steel pylons for a new power line for Scottish and Southern Energy. The 150-mile line will see a network of 600 pylons, some more than 200ft in height, connect renewable power projects in the Highlands to the national grid. Construction of the line must begin within three years, and electricity transmission should begin within six years of the start of construction. This is a similar project to the recently completed Beauly to Denny Power Line. Background information for this project can be found at;

https://www.ssepd.co.uk/BeaulyDenny/
UWS Engineering Ltd will manage their contract as two separate projects, one for fabrication and one for erection.
2.1. Discuss in the context of the fabrication of the pylons how the PRINCE2 Quality Management Strategy (P257) can ensure that the pylons are fit for purpose.
2.2. The Project Initiation Document will include a Communication Management Strategy (P239), which will define all parties interested in the project and describe the means and frequency of communication. For the pylon erection project, identify 5 key stakeholders and outline the means and frequency of communication between them and the project team. You may find useful information at:
http://www.gov.scot/Topics/Business-Industry/Energy/Infrastructure/Energy-Consents/Beauly-Denny-Index/CLS
Select a risk associated with the scenario and using the PRINCE2 approach (P260) carry out a risk analysis. Use a table(s) to set out the risk analysis, proposals for the management of the risk and the risk response. Your report will include a 2 column table setting out 5 effects of the delay on contract progress and the measures that could be taken to mitigate the effects of the delay on progress and the end date.
Part 3 (800 words)
3. Write an essay about the process of successful negotiation in project management. As suggested by Oliver (2006), refer to six key elements in the process: prepare, rehearse, describe your position, propose, bargain, and agree. (14 April 2024)
Part 4
Group Presentation
4. The Board of Directors of the Scottish Division of UWS Engineering Ltd. have appointed you as Projects Director. You are responsible for the project plan for the Centre for Engineering Excellence for Ayr College campus and the steel pylons for the new power line. You will be required to produce a programme for the fabrication and delivery of the pylon steelwork and this should be linked to the pylon erection programme.
4.1. On 24th January 2024 heavy snow stopped the pylons being erected for a period of 3 weeks. Consider the effect on the programme and contract completion and the measures that could be taken to mitigate the effects of the delay.
4.2. The Board of Directors have asked for an update on the projects within your remit. They require information on how the projects are being managed, the progress in allocation of resources and the arrangements that you have put in place to control quality, cost and time.
Prepare a short PowerPoint presentation with your group for the Board. You must arrange the schedule of presentations, issue the invitations, organize the room, equipment and any handouts. (6 March 2024)
