Requirements for Stat/ME 424 Class Project
• This is an individual project. You cannot join forces with anyone else in the class,
but (if you wish) you can collaborate with someone in your lab or research team.
• The basic requirement is you need to both design and analyze an experiment
with three or four factors. The factors can be either treatment or blocking. You
can either conduct an everyday life experiment like baking some nice cookies, a
scientific experiment like improving steel stamping process or an experiment in
the digital space. Do not attempt to conduct any scientific experiments if you do
not have the necessary resources. No $ will be provided by Peter for your project.
But Peter is always available for suggestions.
• The data for your experiment must be collected by you. If possible, you may
assume each of the factors in your experiment has two levels and then use a full
factorial design at 2 levels in Chapter 4 of the textbook. If this choice does not
work for your experiment, you may choose another design from the textbook with
three or four factors.
• You need to model and analyze your experimental data using some statistical
techniques like ANOVA analysis and multiple-comparison procedures. Provide
some discussions of your statistical analysis results.
• Please e-mail me your project proposal by 6:00pm March 23. Penalty for late
proposal. Use either Word or pdf format in 1 page. Mention the following:
description of your experiment, the names of factors and their levels and the name
of response, choice of statistical design, and a rough description of what statistical
analysis you will perform when data are available. Once I receive your proposal, I
will approve/disprove it soon. You are encouraged to submit your proposal before
the deadline.
• Please e-mail to (peter.chien@wisc.edu) your final project report (with the e-mail
subject and file name format 424 Project: the last name and the initial of the first
name) by 6:00pm May 9. Use either Word or pdf format in 10 pages. Include an
Appendix for additional materials if you have. No late report will be accepted.
Learning goals of this project:
Grasps the essence of the scientific question and communicates the results of the
analysis clearly.
Develops an appropriate statistical strategy, such as utilizing an appropriate
experimental design and collecting relevant data.
Identifies and properly addresses the assumptions underlying the statistical strategy,
producing reliable estimates of uncertainty.
Utilizes statistical computing software to produce informative plots and
statistical summaries and tables.
Critically addresses the limitations of the study and the statistical conclusions.
E-mail or talk to me if you have any questions. Hope you will enjoy your project. One
sample project report from the past has been posted at learn@uw.
