Project Brief - ENG 5105
Design and Construction of a Wildlife Camera
This discipline unit coordinator of ENG 5105 electrical stream is receiving unwanted guests
in their garden during the night. To identify the unwanted guests, the coordinator has
searched up a range of wildlife cameras, which can be expensive, ranging in price from $80
- $2000 AUD, with relatively limited functionality. The goal of this unit is to design a wildlife
camera meeting the following needs:
● The wildlife camera should be low cost (<$50)
● The camera needs to detect either red foxes or possums
● The camera should be able operate on battery for at least one night, ideally a week
● The camera should capture images of the detected wildlife, which can be either
streamed to an external server or stored on a SD card
● The design should be compact, non-intrusive to the natural environment, and be
visually appealing
● The design should be waterproof to the IP67-rated standards
● The design could have additional functionality such as a web-server for users, ability
to steer the camera, and/or be able to correctly classify the animals
You will be marked according to the level of functionality obtained and number and quality of
implemented features in your camera. Your design should trade-off cost against functionality.
Deliverables:
As part of this project, your team is expected to deliver the following:
● Stakeholder analysis identifying key needs for users of the system
● A review of a existing systems and system architectures
● A concept design and preliminary presentation covering at least two design
alternatives, and including detailed requirements, functional diagrams and
descriptions, design specifications
● A detailed design and presentation that considers sustainability, includes circuit
diagrams, mechanical drawings, software architectures, and an analysis of power
consumption
● A prototype wildlife camera meeting the outlined specifications, and including some
additional functionalities
● Test results of the prototype in the wild (ie. on campus or in the gardens)
1Resources:
● You will be provided with a Raspberry Pi Zero embedded computer and some basic
electronics (esp32 embedded camera, usb camera, small servos, and a small
electret condenser microphone)
● You will also have access to 3D printing and manufacturing facilities to prototype your
system
● You will also be provided with a mentor to help guide you through the project.
Mentors are volunteering their time and valuable expertise, so please use them
wisely
Notes:
● You may purchase additional hardware or other components (at your own expense,
and within the target cost of the design)
● You may replace the primary processor with an alternative (eg. a microprocessor),
and have complete control of the design and how you choose to meet the user needs
(feel free to experiment!).
