Your final essay should answer one of the following questions, in full, addressing theoretical, methodological, and practical concerns. You must include direct references to assigned readings, as well as references to specific class discussions and relevant case studies (e.g. museum exhibits, historic sites, etc.). You should not need to consult any outside materials to complete this essay; if you are citing from an assigned reading, just reference the author’s name and the article or book title. Your essay should address the themes discussed this semester, from the philosophical side, all the way across and including disciplinary/methodological distinctions, to the technical side.

Before beginning to answer these questions, you should review your class notes as well as assigned readings and your annotations on those.

1. How has the field of public history evolved since its inception? What methods have comprised it and what challenges has it faced? What does the future of the field look like for the 21st century?

2. How do public historians interpret historic sites or design exhibitions? How do interpretive strategies and curatorial planning shape visitors’ understandings of history?

3. How do public historians make decisions about what to include or not to include in their interpretations, and how does this reflect concepts such as archival silences, shared authority, community engagement, etc.

4. How do public historians interpret contentious histories for broad audiences? What are some ways in which the field has responded to controversies over historical interpretation? How can pressing contemporary social issues be incorporated into public historical work for diverse publics?
