Lampeter 2024: CEGE0012 Assessment Guidelines

WEEK 2: GEOMATICS ACTIVITIES

Tasks

Under supervision students will work in 3 teams, divided into sub-groups, to conduct the following tasks over the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of Week 2 of the Lampeter field course:

•    GNSS Surveying – with Dr Santosh Bhattarai

•    Setting Out – with Dr Pippa Cowles

•    Laser Scanning – with Kate Pexman.

There will be daily briefings to prepare groups for the work to be undertaken.

Assessment

The work undertaken here constitutes 1/3 of the module mark for CEGE0012: Scenarios in Civil Engineering.

Presentations

Each of the three activities will be assessed by a short, group presentation, held daily. Please note that this is a hard deadline and no accommodations are made for SoRA here.

•   Setting Out presentation (5%)

•   GNSS Presentation (5%)

•    Laser Scanning Presentation (5%)

Essay

For this component there is also an individual essay submission, worth 85% of the total mark awarded.

For this essay, students must address the following topic by referring to tasks undertaken during Week 2 and earlier weeks of the field course:

Making specific reference to your own work over the last 3 weeks, please discuss:

(i)       how surveyors ensure quality in their work

and

(ii)      the skills and attributes of a ‘good’ surveyor.

The total word count is 1250 words.

Footnotes, bibliographies, appendices, tables, figures etc, are not included in this value. Your submission must include the word count at the end of the work. Any work over this total word count will be penalised by 10% points. This is in accordance with the UCL regulations specified here:https://www.ucl.ac.uk/academic-manual/chapters/chapter-4-assessment-framework-taughtprogrammes/section-3-module-assessment#3.13

Academic Integrity

Students must maintain the highest standards of academic integrity whilst studying at UCL. All work submitted for assessment must be the student’s own, unless authorisation has been given for collaboration, and all work must be appropriately cited and referenced using an appropriate referencing convention.

All reports will be submitted through Turnitin. Use of AI-based software is not permitted for this assignment.

Where plagiarism and/or collusion is detected a case for academic misconduct will be raised in accordance with UCL policy and practice:https://www.ucl.ac.uk/academic-manual/chapters/chapter-6-student-casework-framework/section-9-student-academic-misconductprocedure

Deadline

The deadline for this work is 5pm on Friday 28th June 2024. SoRA extensions can be applied here. Late penalties will be applied in accordance with UCL regulations.

Guidance for Marking

The general departmental guidelines for essay-based assignments will be used for marking. This can be found overleaf.

In addition to the general descriptors for marking, the assessor will look at the following when awarding the mark for this piece:

•    How well does the essay address the questions pose?

•    How well does the essay draw upon the personal experiences of the author over the last 3 weeks?

Generic answers that do not draw upon the personal experiences from Lampeter will not be awarded a pass mark.
