NBS-7041X Business Leadership and Change Management
Formative Assignment #1 - Netflix Internal Diagnosis
Task:
Using the McKinsey 7-S model (Cameron and Green 2020 p.325), you diagnose features within each of the seven internal areas of the Netflix business: Structure, Strategy, Systems, Shared values, Skills, Style, and Staff. This enables you to identify areas of the business that are out of alignment with the goals and vision of the business.
You scan publications on and about the Netflix business to gather data. You place specific extracts under each of the seven headings, with in-text references (citations) to your sources with the author’s name and year of publication. And you place a full reference to each source in a reference list at the foot of your work, using the Harvard referencing style. (go to the UEA library site for guidelines here).
You then present a clear and concise ‘problem statement’, which is the conclusion that you have reached after analysing the data (“So, the problem is …”).
Purpose:
A key feature of the summative assessment for this module requires you to diagnose and identify problems within the Netflix business that require attention, the ‘problem statement’. You will use this formative work to gain feedback on the quality of your diagnosis. This will contribute to your ability to succeed on this Business Leadership and Change Management module.
The Netflix Internal Diagnosis (7-S and Problem Statement) is an item within the Summative assessment submission.
Process:
You will prepare one PowerPoint slide as an infographic containing the populated 7-S model and the problem statement, containing approximately 200 words, plus 200 words explanatory narrative in the ‘notes’ field. Please include a reference list here.
You will bring your Formative work to the seminar on Week Three Monday 1st July. There, you will share your work with other students to gain their feedback on the quality of the data, specifically whether it is informative, clear, and concise, and whether the data comes from reliable sources. The formative material will be treated as ‘work in progress’.
Be ready to share your work with the seminar leaders, and with the wider class of students. Formative work is not formally marked – it is a source of developmental feedback for you.
