Task Description:

Based on material covered during one of the two practicals led by Prof. Fuller (conservation and climate change), students will compose a blog post of no more than 500 words describing a real or fictional (but plausible) situation where climate change is impacting the conservation status of a species or ecosystem, and what practical actions are, or could be, undertaken to remedy the situation.

Create a blog post that is engaging, interesting and informative to the public at large, covering one or more ideas from the pracs, with possibilities including but not limited to (i) practical actions that can be taken to help conserve a species or ecosystem in the face of a changing climate, (ii) the costs and benefits of taking practical action for climate change conservation, (iii) our degree of certainty over whether climate-relevant conservation actions will actually work, (iv) whether we should focus on climate mitigation versus adaptation, (v) factoring the human response to climate change into climate-smart conservation.

It is not essential to include illustrations or images in the blog post. Just 500 words will do, but remember that the content needs to engaging and informative for a general web-audience and not written in super-scientific techno-speak.

Criteria & Marking:

This task comprises 20% of the total course assessment.

60% of the grade will be awarded for well-researched high quality content.

40% of the grade will be awarded for clear, engaging writing.
