Assignment 6: Algorithmic Clock
It can be said that a clock is a dynamic model to describe the relation between the Sun and the Earth. Throughout history there has been different models that tried to visualize and sonorize this connection. From the sun clock and the clepsydra (water clock) to the atomic clock and the cuckoo clock, the systems to measure and regulate the flow of time have implications that go beyond their timekeeping function.
For the this assignment you will create a clock to explore the possibilities of designing with code while experimenting with time, motion and interaction.
- Create an alternative clock that is both visually strong and an effective timekeeper. You, the author, must be able to decipher it at any time (maybe only you).
- Think how your clock will re-invent, challenge or complicate the classic clock.
- What aspect/s of time will your clock display? Consider this list: circularity, reversibility, linearity, relativity, continuity, discontinuity, ephemerality, permanent, impermanent, duration, rhythm, accumulation, repetition (no two moments are the same).
- How does our perception of time relates to the clock that you are designing? Can you find relationships between visual/sonic perception and time perception?
