Assignment 4: Pathways Project

COMM 105: Values, Ethics, and Community

This is a revised version of the assignment, posted on Monday, November 3, 2025

Purpose:

Begin to align your values, interests, and goals with potential career options and pathways. You will learn to envision how you can integrate your skills and interests, create value, and contribute to your community. Through a combination of visualizing, articulating, using GenAI, and sharing your ideas and plans, this assignment is designed to help you proactively begin to craft your journey at the UBC Sauder School of Business to make the most of your degree.

Learning Objectives:

Understand how you can create value and contribute to your communities through your career  journey. Identify possibilities for different career paths and develop skills to explore opportunities with curiosity. Build community through the appreciation of others’ career explorations. Develop skills for using AI responsibly for career exploration (e.g., generating question prompts, finding  career resources, evaluating AI-generated ideas). Reflect on the value of AI career guidance.

Guidelines:

This assignment is due Sunday, November 30 at 10pm Pacific Time.

It is worth 25% of your overall course grade in COMM 105.

Submit on Canvas through the assignment dropbox. Convert your documents to PDF and combine all parts into a single PDF file for upload. Multiple files will not be accepted.

Use single-spaced 11-point Arial font, 1-inch (2.54cm) page margins, and 8.5x11 inch pages.

Ensure your assignment is easy to read. Use section headers to organize your assignment.

Bold and italicize any course concept or framework that you reference in your work.

File naming convention: Last5NumbersOfStudent#-Sec#-AssignmentName.pdf (e.g. 12345-Sec101-PathwaysProject.pdf).

This is an individual assignment. UBC policies regarding academic integrity and plagiarism apply. You may not work on this project with others.

Assignment components:

●    Page 1: Cover Page

●    Page 2: Visual Pathways Representation

●    Pages 3-5: Written Reflection

●    Page 6+: References List

Supplementary component: (submitted to a different assignment dropbox on Canvas)

GenAI Declaration Form. (submitted as a separate PDF; see Canvas for details)

Peer presentation: You will make a 5-minute in-class presentation of your Pathways Project visual to a group of 3-4 peers on November 24 or 25. Presenting, providing feedback, and uploading your draft visual to Canvas grants you 1% in the Active Learning category. See Canvas for details.

AI Guidelines:

AI is required for the Visual Pathways Representation (page 2)

You are required to use AI for a portion of your career exploration research. You are also required to do traditional research, too. You will not be able to effectively complete this  assignment if you do not use AI and traditional forms of research.

Optionally, you may also use AI for the visual design of your infographic.

Use your own discretion about how much of your career research should be conducted using AI, and how much should be conducted using traditional online research or in-person conversations.

It is your responsibility to verify information provided by GenAI models. You are responsible for asking GenAI models to provide sources for any specific facts or statistics they share. You are also responsible for independently checking the credibility of these sources by reading the source information. Do not assume that facts shared by a GenAI model are accurate just because they have provided a source.

A paid GenAI model is not necessary. UBC has suggested two options: ChatGPT (free tier) or Microsoft Copilot for Organizations (free with your UBC account). These are UBC’s approved models; you may choose to use any model that you wish.

AI is optional for the Written Reflection (pages 3-5)

Where relevant, you may use ChatGPT or other large language models for the Written Reflection.

You must save and disclose all chat logs used to assist you with this assignment. See the Page 6+: References List section for more details on how to cite and reference AI properly.

Instructions:

Page 1: Cover Page

Include the assignment title, your COMM 105 section number, and the last five digits of your student number. We will be uploading assignments to Turnitin, so to protect your privacy, please do not include your full name or full student number anywhere in your assignment. View a sample cover page here.

Page 2: Visual Pathways Representation

Build a visual representation of your Pathways Project that can help guide your career exploration during your undergraduate experience. The visual representation should be designed to communicate what is distinctly you – your values, identity, interests, and communities at this point in time – and will incorporate three different career paths to guide you in thinking broadly about potential future occupations.

The visual representation can take any detailed graphic form (e.g. infographic, mind map, flow diagram, bubble map, etc.) and can be either computer-generated or hand-drawn (or both!). Think creatively about the most effective way to present the required components listed below and to visually communicate your career exploration ideas.

You may wish to refer to the examples posted in the assignment module on Canvas for an idea of what a one-page visual representation might look like; however, you are not constrained to   follow any particular creative approach (and you should expect to improve on the examples).

Required components:

●   Your main interest or area of curiosity (e.g. sustainable business, basketball, building your YouTube audience, etc.). This could be expressed in a variety of ways, such as a belief statement, a mantra, a question that drives you, an issue you want to solve, or an impact you want to have on the world.

●   Your 3-4 most important professional values (e.g. how you want to lead your professional life, what is important to you in business). These are likely, but not necessarily, some of the core personal values you defined in Assignments 1 and 2, as you may find that some values become more or less relevant in a professional context.

●   Three different career paths that you are interested in exploring further.

o One or two out of the three paths must be business career paths that either require a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree or involve significant business-related responsibilities and skills).

o Each career path selected is from a different industry. For example, you cannot choose both Investment Banking and Private Equity as two of the three options, as these are both within the field of Finance.

●    Each of your three different career paths will include:

o Skills: Important and relevant skills for the career path.

o Education and Training: Required education, courses, training, or certifications.

o UBC Experience: Specific, relevant experience you can gain at UBC (e.g. a role in a specific club, a part-time job, or a volunteering opportunity) to support that career path.

o Community Impact: Two ways that your skills, experience, or influence from each career pathway can support your community(ies).

o Dream Job Pathway: An ultimate “dream job” for you along each career path, plus a detailed outline of a possible career path to get to your dream job. These should be specific positions (hint: one good place for inspiration would be to review Linked In to see the job pathways of Sauder alumni).

o Unanswered Questions: Two unanswered but important questions you still need to address about each career path.

In-text citations are not required in the visual representation, but all sources for the information and images included in it (e.g. Linked In profiles, statistics, photos, etc.) must be fully referenced in the APA-style References List starting on Page 6 of your document.

Note: You are welcome to format this page in landscape orientation if you prefer.

Page 3-5: Written Reflection

Explain and reflect on your visual representation as follows. Note: These section lengths are recommendations, not requirements; but do not exceed the overall three-page limit.

Introduction and Explanation (~½ page): Explain what you really want the reader to understand about you from your visual pathways reflection from Page 2. What are the key takeaways from your visual representation which are unique to you?

Values Fit (~1 page): For each of your three career pathways, define what success would look like for you in this career path. Identify two measurable indicators of success and identify how they relate to your value(s) (e.g. number of people influenced, community recognition or awards, skills mastered, people influenced, professional certifications, number of hours volunteered, etc.) Then, identify a specific scenario exemplifying the most likely way that each career path would conflict with one of your core values, and one specific action you could take to avoid or mitigate this conflict. Consider the self-reflection you have done throughout the course (around values, ethics, interests, communities you wish to impact, etc.)

Community Interaction (-½ page): How have interactions with communities impacted your career pathways exploration? Consider your personal communities (family, friends), and UBC and Sauder communities (e.g. upper-year students, instructors, BCC staff, academic advisors, etc.) Which community has most influenced your potential career pathways, and why?

AI Reflection (1 page): Describe in detail how you used AI in your career exploration process. This section should be specific and personal. Address the following:

○   Show the refinement to your GenAI prompting process. Include one example of an initial prompt you tried, and a revised prompt, then summarize the difference in the response you received (copy the prompts directly in your document and  include a link to the chat log in this section). What did this teach you about working effectively with AI?

○    Describe how people in the industries of your three career pathways could responsibly use AI in their work (e.g., decision-making, research, communication, client interaction), and explain what ethical safeguards would be important. Be specific. What is important to consider about GenAI that is unique to these industries? Cite your sources that describe the factors affecting responsible AI   use across these industries, and cite your sources that recommend which ethical safeguards would be important. Ensure your proposed ethical safeguards are feasible.

APA-style in-text citations are required in this section, for both traditional research and Generative AI use. All cited sources must also be included in your References list on Page 6  (refer to the next section for instructions). Remember to use headings and short paragraphs to make your work easy to read.

Page 6+: References List

In a comprehensive references list, provide full APA style. 7th edition references from all sources used in this assignment (including your visual representation and written reflection). This includes websites, job postings, statistics, images, Linked In profiles, etc.). You likely will need a significant number of outside sources to appropriately complete this assignment.

●   Citations are required when you directly quote outside sources, paraphrase ideas from outside sources, or use data or information from outside sources that is not common  knowledge.

●   Clip-art or stock images, such as those provided in design programs such as Canva, are generally royalty-free and do not need to be cited unless otherwise stated. Any other images or external materials you find on the internet must include an in-text citation and be included in this References List. In-text citations for external images should be placed next to the image.

●   You must cite personal conversations, though they should not appear in your references list because they are not publicly available information. For more information on how to cite a personal conversation, refer to the APA website .

●    Follow APA rules for how to cite Generative AI . Any text that is directly from Generative AI must be quoted and cited. Beyond that, APA suggests describing how you use AI in a methods section; in lieu of this, you will be using Sauder’s Generative AI declaration form. submitting it to a separate assignment dropbox on Canvas. See the Canvas  assignment page for instructions.

●   Class materials and course concepts (e.g. from prep materials, video lectures, or lecture slides) do not need an APA citation or reference as long as you are not directly quoting  from these materials. However, you must bold and italicize each course concept that   you reference in your work.

There is no limit to the number of pages of your References List.

It is your responsibility to learn how to use the APA format. Assignments that are inadequately referenced (either lacking detail or using improper format) may be returned for correction and will be subject to penalties, including possible academic misconduct investigations.
